Why Am I So Gassy?

1.74KViews

Gassiness affects us all, and it can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing. If you are feeling gassy constantly, you are probably wondering why. By isolating the cause of the problem, you can learn to avoid your triggers and not have to suffer as often. Here are some common causes of gassiness:

1. Swallowing Air

Throughout your day, you swallow a lot of air, which gets dispelled from your body as gas. While it is not possible to avoid swallowing air entirely, you can reduce the amount you swallow by refraining from these actions:

  • Chewing gum
  • Eating quickly
  • Drinking from a straw
  • Smoking
  • Wearing loose-fitting dentures

2. Food/Drink Intolerances

Consuming food or drinks when you have an intolerance can lead to gassiness. The most common is lactose intolerance, which leads to a variety of stomach issues when you consume milk, cheese, ice cream, or other dairy products. If you drink lactose-free milk and still suffer from gastrointestinal issues, you may have a dairy intolerance as well.

Gluten intolerance — is another common cause of gassiness. If you get gassy after eating wheat, barley, and rye products, it may be due to a gluten intolerance or potentially even celiac disease (gluten allergy).

3. Fermented and Carbonated Food/Beverages

Carbonated beverages are pumped with gas, which your body expels in the form of burping or flatulence after you consume them. Soda, energy drinks, and other carbonated beverages will usually lead to gassiness.

Fermented and food and drinks are high in probiotics and can therefore lead to gassiness. These foods and beverages include wine, yogurt, sauerkraut, olives, and beer.

4. Other “Gassy” Foods

There are several other food types which have a high likelihood of causing gas. These include:

  • Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and cauliflower
  • Beans
  • FODMAPs, which are foods that ferment quickly after consumption. These include artichoke, dried fruit, artificial sweeteners, onion, garlic, and cashews
  • High-fat foods which don’t necessarily cause gas, but they often cause bloating which can lead to gas

5. An Underlying Medical Condition

Certain gastrointestinal medical conditions can lead to chronic gassiness. These conditions include irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, Colitis, and several others. If you are concerned about your gassiness — especially if it is combined with other symptoms — talk with your doctor. He or she can help pinpoint the cause of your gastrointestinal issues and get you treatment if necessary.
